We have often heard and experienced how dramatic teen relationships can be from mood swings to slipping of grades and outright rebellion. The child you knew to be a model of good behavior suddenly goes in a different direction when they start dating. As a parent, you need to know how to build a healthy relationship for your teen.
You need to define limits for your teen when they start dating. Not only do they need to be taught good dating behavior but they also need to know what is acceptable with you about them and the person they are dating then. You need to know where they are and how and when they are meeting. When they are meeting up at your house or at some other friend’s house, they need to be chaperoned.
Chaperoned dances and public outings are also a good option. You should also know how much time they are spending with each other. If you think they are spending too much time with each other, it is better to confront your teen about it. Define their limits clearly so that they don’t end up with an F grade.
Let them buy what they want to for their (what you consider a temporary) better half as long as they have the money for it. Don’t give them any money. They should know how to stay on the budget while buying presents for the other person.
Teenage relationships with all their giddy, head-over-heels bliss might be an opportunity for you to teach your child about balance in relationship and coping with the thing they are considering love. No matter how hard your child tries to convince you that this is love, chances are their relationship won’t last long. When the inevitable happens, you need to be there for them and prepare them beforehand for it.
That depends on your perspective. Allow them to go as far in a relationship as you want. If you start feeling uncomfortable about the intensity of their relationship, talk to your teen about it. If things are getting too serious, suggest they take a small break in a relationship. And make sure they don’t ignore your advice and suggestions.
