With time racism seems like an issue lost in the pages of history, right? Not really. While we would love to make such claims, it's not really true. Co-existence with other racial groups is still not as prevalent as it needs to be. There are a lot of trust issues and misunderstandings when it comes to race. Which is precisely why teaching kids about racism and diversity is a necessary part of parenting.
Parents should never discourage their teens from asking questions about cultural and racial differences. If parents are not comfortable with certain questions or lack real knowledge, they should do some research and then raise the subject with their teen again. Teenage is the most impressionable phase of one's life; parents, teachers, and the society as a whole, play important roles in formulating a teen's world view. So, it’s better to keep the channel of questions open. This way teens will be able to get a better insight into cultures different from theirs. The idea is not to pretend that we're all the same, but to celebrate what's different and unique.
As a parent it’s your responsibility to practice what you preach. So, if you belittle another culture and talk in innuendos about other races, don't be surprised when your teen starts doing the same. Such behavior does not only hurt others, but sets a bad example for your kids. At times people try to hide racism under the cloak of humor, while adults can often spot crass jokes, the same cannot be said for teens that are learning the different dimensions associated with different races and cultures. If you're trying to go about teaching tolerance to kids, you should first examine your own behavior.
The best way to teach your teens about different races and cultures is to hit the history. Introduce your teens to books and movies that deal with historical facts and encourage ways to deal with racism. For example you could teach them through the examples of different historical figures; Martin Luther King's work is an inspiration to people from all races and cultures.
Teach your teens to respect diversity – different opinions, skin color and culture should be respected and not made fun of. Teaching kids about tolerance is necessary for harmony and peace in a society. And there's so much teens can learn from another culture or race. Depriving them of something that can help them grow should be avoided at all cost!
